Breaking the fourth wall? With that awkward ass smile for 10 seconds? God damn that was so strange and unsettling.Goodnight Mommy Movie on Netflix 2014 The motifs with blinds and fire were very interesting. Of course the imagery is incredible and will be burned into my brain for a good while. I just thought that the "torture porn" thing was actually really impactful and not tasteless like some people are probably saying. But in this I was really invested and even the smaller stuff like the magnifying glass I found really hard to watch.
Ive seen all the saw movies and other "torture porn" stuff and the torture never so much as made me wince cause I didn't give a shit about the plot or characters. I also thought the film's 2nd act foray into hostage torture was actually really cool. So when the twist came I was kicking myself for not seeing it coming which I think any good twist should make me do. I guess I'm a bloke for not seeing the twist coming, looking back it seems pretty obvious but isn't that what makes a good twist? I mean in the beginning so much of our attention was directed at the mother and trying to figure out what was wrong with her, that I found myself glossing over or not thinking about the details of the boys. I enjoyed my viewing, but probably won't watch it again. It teetered the torture porn line, but if it was torture porn, it was pretty beautiful torture porn.
Ultimately, I don't think I took away anything from this film. Though, I don't think this actually adding anything to the film. More than any sort of Nazi-Youth imagery, I found it more of a Christ's Passion type allusion, with the mom as Christ (she's essentially in the Christ position while she's tied to the bed), and those little monsters as the Romans. Finally, it was the ultimate end of Momma, just like the specter of Lucas pushed Elias to torture mother. It explained the brother's death (the cave in the beginning qua the catacombs where they discover the cat), and ultimately demonstrates Elias' unwillingness to accept death as it happens. The doppelganger photo was just a red herring, but it was a poorly constructed one and wasn't actually explored enough to capture the viewer's attention and draw them off the course. lame, and felt it coming pretty early on. I also found the Sixth Sense-esque twist a little. I thought it was beautifully shot, the acting was solid, and some of the imagery presented was lovely. I just watched this and I walked away a little nonplussed. Ultimately, it’s the dead cat (Elias’s inability to consider the other side of the coin) that burns down the house and kills the mom. And whenever he has second thoughts, Luka appears to reassure him, at one point violently, that their mother isn’t actually their mother, that she must’ve killed the cat. The mom is an imposter, the box is transparent, and the cat is dead.
But to Elias, as soon as the thought crosses his mind, he’s made his decision. There wasn’t enough evidence for me to conclude whether or not the mom was real or an imposter until the end, when it becomes apparent that Luka is imaginary and that Elias is mentally unstable. This method is the one used by myself, and I imagine most audience members, when trying to decide the legitimacy of the mother. Has anyone thought about the significance of the dead cat in the glass tank? I couldn't help but think of Schrodinger’s Cat, where the cat is simultaneously alive and dead until the box is open and the cat observed. This is going to sound like a stretch, but bear with me.
